On Monday 2nd December students in Year 7 & 8 were privileged to be visited by representatives from York City Football Club to hear from professionals working within the most popular sport in the UK, the Football industry. As part of York City’s November Junior Reds supporters raffle draw Freddie Handley (Year 8) won the prize of “bring a player to school”. Freddie chose his three favourite footballers from the 1st team, and through liaison between York City and Fulford School a comprehensive “careers in sport/football” form time programme was built around Freddie’s prize.
As part of the careers programme all students in Year 7 & 8 attended an employer assembly with Steve Dorey (Development Officer), Kai Connell (Media Manager), and Cameron Walton (Commercial Executive) where they had the opportunity to learn about different careers within the sports industry, bringing to life some of the careers discussed in the “Careers in Sport”, and “Careers in the Football Industry” form time careers lessons from the previous week. Following the assembly, a smaller group of Year 8 students attended an after-school training session with Freddie’s three favourite players – Harrison Male, Alex Hunt and Joe Felix. Harrison, Alex and Joe took their time to speak to all the students answering their questions, taking photographs and signing autographs. The students were able to gain first-hand knowledge of what it is like to be a Footballer as well as picking up some helpful hints and tips which will stand them in good stead for any future career they pursue. I would like to thank Steve, Kai, Cameron, Harrison, Alex and Joe for providing an amazing experience for Fulford students that they will treasure forever.

“It was a pleasure to have York City visit the school on Monday evening and well done to Fred for making it all happen! The Y8 boys that attended the session really enjoyed the chance to showcase their skills in front of three very-talented York City players. Alex Hunt, Harrison Male and Joe Felix were excellent role models from the moment they arrived, answering some interesting questions from the students including ‘what do you eat for your pre-match meal’ and ‘do you have a swimming pool at your house’!!! They also took time to have photographs and sign autographs. We thank them once again for taking the time out to give our young people an experience they will remember for a lifetime.” (Simon Russell – PE Teacher)
“I felt nervous but very excited about Harrison Male, Alex hunt and Joe Felix, the York City players coming into school, after winning the junior reds raffle draw. I was really thankful to them for taking the time to come into school and watch me play football with me and my friends. I hope to have skills like them one day.” (Freddie Handley – Year 8)
“It was a very nice experience to meet the players and it was so interesting to find out about their lives as footballers”. (Roo McCabe – Year 8)
